Small, Beautifully Moving Parts: A SXSW Must See

Here in Austin, we are right in the middle of SXSW (South by Southwest Music & Film Festival) and recently we discovered that one is not as cool as one thought if one is calling it by its full name.  So, if you are in Austin, be sure to say, “South By.” ie. “We thought we would catch a couple of films at South By.”  If you are a carpooling soccer-watching mom, like me, you will earn some instant street cred with your kiddos.

Unusually, if someone asks me if I have seen anything at South By this year, I can actually say, “Yes!”  Today, right in the middle of our work day, we headed over to watch Small, Beautifully Moving Parts.  It turned out to be a not-small very-beautiful movie with sweet moving parts.  It made our day.  And not just because we know the lead actor.  It just made us happy.

 

But since you ask, yes, we actually know Anna Margaret Hollyman (remember that name!) And, we were so proud of her performance.  She handled her character, Sarah Sparks, in a thoughtful and compassionate manner.  Sarah is pregnant and trying to figure out exactly how she feels about the idea of being a mother, and in so-doing seeks out her estranged mother in hopes of discovering the answer.  We were enamored with Anna Margaret’s ability to capture some complicated feelings of anyone who is both a daughter and a mother, and all with a gentle sense of humor.

 

I won’t say anything more, because there is one more chance for you to see it this week.  If you are wanting to remember that wonderful feeling you have after waking up from a nap in the springtime when the windows are open and the new fresh flower scents are wafting over you, go see this movie.  It will just make you smile.  It will be showing at the State Theater on Congress Ave at 9 pm on Friday, March 18.

Left is some cool swag that we received at the opening party last night.  (Lest you think I’m cooler than I am, I just learned the word, swag. I’m feeling pretty hip.) Anyway, this was silk-screened by Anna Margaret’s sisters, Mary and Helen.  I love the sisterly support … it’s just as sweet as the movie. And, I can’t even begin to tell you about that lizard-lightbulb guy, you’ll just have to go see for yourself.

    I hope so, too … and speaking of Nashville, (which makes me think of music), the music for the movie was perfect, too.
